Description During the first months of 1999, Spectrum Group was commissioned by Village International Cinemas to evaluate sites for cinema development in the main cities in China. This report describes the results that ensued for Beijing where a 1,000-seat five-screen development was considered within the main city centre. The cinema attendance market at that time was tightly controlled by government authority restricting foreign film productions to thirteen film releases only per year, a vastly lower than normal exposure to the Hollywood blockbuster shows. Even Hong Kong productions were classified as foreign films. These unusual conditions have had a major impact on the operations of cinemas in China as during exhibition of each new title there is a clear advantage in allocation all of the seating possible to the new material. In these circumstances the well-located new multiplex concept that in other markets would have 10 or more screens is at a disadvantage. In addition, the Chinese market is diluted by the availability of very low cost pirate copies of new film productions on tape and more recently DVD. The study utilized geo-demographic information, consumer research material specifically conducted by Spectrum Group and a quantification of competitive operations. The assessment of attendance potential was guided by experience in many other studies throughout the world including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore etc.
