The research investigates a major region of around 900,000 residents that were without multiplex cinemas Year 2000. Four proposed developments were evaluated under a variety of competitive scenarios based on a demographic analysis, a quantitative review of the cinema attendance data, market surveys and focus discussion groups. The catchment areas of the proposed new cinemas ranged from 62,000 residents within 20 minutes drive time to 506,000. Existing facilities were centrally located and competitive moves had been made to establish a large cinema complex on the western corridor towards Prato. In 2003 two large multiplex were operating within the Firenze market; a Vis Pathe at Campi Bisenzio and Warner Village at San Bartolo. Cinema attendance was not boosted due to the new facilities as attendance totalled 2,966,000 in 2001 prior to the increase in the supply of screens and seats only rising very marginally to 3,021,000 or by less than 2% following a full first year of operation. Together the two new multiplex attracted 1,174,600 admissions in 2003 with the Warner Village cinemas rapidly gaining market share. |
